The study of binary asteroid motion during approaching with the Earth

Transactions of IAA RAS, issue 25, 59–72 (2012)

Keywords: binary asteroid, action range, probability of collisions, stability of the system

Abstract

In this paper the approaching of model binary asteroid with the Earth has been study to obtain possible catastrophic events, such as components collision or system disintegration. The binary asteroid parameters were obtained with the aid of statistic analysis of data on known binary asteroid belonged to Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs). The estimation of probability of catastrophic events for different groups of NEA obtained. The state of binary system as a result of close passage by the Earth has been studied by variation of target parameter and heliocentric velocity values of inertia center of binary asteroids at the instant of entrance in the sphere of action. Components are considered to be moving around common inertia center in the eclipitic plane. Dependence of the state of binary asteroid from inclination of satellite orbit is shown on the example of Aten's group. On the example of Amor's group the final state of binary system has been studied by the way of variation of argument of pericenter and target parameter at the point of entry into Earth sphere of action at different heliocentric velocities.
