On Using the Technology of Virtual Machines at the IAA Analysis Center

Abstract
Computing resources virtualization technology offered by VMware Inc. is used in frame of specialized analysis center for processing various types of space geodesy observational data. Virtual machines are created on the multiprocessor SUN Fire X4600 Server completed with large capacity external mass storage. VMware server works on the basic operational system Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 AS. The chosen technology allows to construct the analysis center hardware as a population of virtual machines of two types: calculators and communication server. The calculators are virtual machines with an operational system MS Windows XP SP2. The communication server based on the FreeBSD6.3 system ensures data retrieval from external sources (remote data servers) under the specific time-table and the distribution of the analysis results trough external ftp-server. The isolated space of ip-addresses allows virtual machines to interact with each other and with VMware server but they are could be accessed from outside only through the special supplement - VMware Server Console. All the data is allocated on external mass storage and is accessible for any virtual machine. Other perspectives of using the virtualization technology at the analysis center are considered in the paper.
