Abstract

Basic aspects of improving the existing method of very low frequency (VLF) time transfer used by Russian NAVY radio stations [1] are considered. The existing time transfer method of carrier transfer series resolution for high accuracy phase measurement with phase ambiguity resolving and amplitude modulation of one of them by low frequency (LF) time marker impulses. The main innovation aims of this new method is reducing the time transfer session duration, broadcasting additional data (current time and UTC-UT1 time difference), and providing interference robust VLF time transfer. Reducing the time transfer session duration is achieved by optimizing the duration of session components and pauses among them and using full reformatted 3 min duration phase modulated LF pulse sequence. The duration of the present-day LF time marker pulse program is 14…19 min. The phase modulated radio call sign, current time and UTC-UT1 time difference broadcast in 1 min duration sequence. Full duration of the time transfer is reduced from 30…41 min to 13 min. The new LF phase modulated pulse program is more robust to interference. The additional data transfer is provided. The novelty of the proposed solutions consists in transferring time markers, time and other necessary information by carrier phase manipulation. The units of transmitting and receiving apparatus realizing the method improved are developed, produced and successfully tested.
