This article provides general information about local geodetic networks (LGS) of the IAA RAS observatories, their composition, purpose and methods for their modernization. The modernization of the LGS includes a set of measures to increase the efficiency and accuracy of means and methods to obtain information about the geometry of LGS objects and their mutual location in space. As a result, the accuracy (RMS of coordinate determination) is not worse than 1.5 mm in plan and 1 mm in height when a spatial position was determined for the reference points of observational instruments such as RT-32, RT-13, QOS «Sazhen TM» and GLONASS/GPS. The obtained results show the validity of the chosen ways to improve the quality of the LGS.
