Abstract

The geometrical interpretation of the conditions of observations is given for the transits of planets through the solar disk. The mechanism of the formation of Mercury's image and the “black drop” phenomenon are described for visual observations of planet near the limb of the Sun. The main problems of the ephemeris astronomy solved by observations of the transits are discussed briefly. The structure of archive of observations of transits, that created at IAA RAS, is described. The preliminary values of corrections $\Delta T^s$ to the scale $UT$ obtained by averaging (O−C) for moments of contacts at 1631–1878 are in good agreement with the results of Stephenson and Morrison.
